How to Get a CARFAX
If used vehicles could talk, many of them would have interesting stories to tell prospective owners. For instance, a used car may have had a title issue, been involved in an accident or may have suffered mechanical difficulties. Fortunately, you don't have to leave everything to chance when you purchase a used car. Instead, you can opt to obtain the vehicle's available history with a service provided at Carfax.com.

Locate and write down the 17-digit vehicle identification number (VIN) from the vehicle for which you want to order a history report. The VIN is located on the windshield or on the passenger window. Navigate to Carfax.com, or use the link located in the "Resources" section of this article.
-
2
Click on the tab at the top of the home page that states "Order Reports." Your browser will be re-directed to "Carfax Vehicle History Reports Order Form." If you use the link in the "Resources" section of this article, you will be taken directly to the form.

3
Choose the number of Carfax reports you want to purchase: 1, 5 or 10. If you are considering purchasing several cars, you will likely want to purchase more reports than what the single option offers you.
-
4
Enter your name, mailing address, email address and credit card information into the appropriate boxes on the page and carefully read the "Customer Agreement" before you submit your order.
-
5
Submit your order by clicking on the button labeled "Submit My Order." Create and confirm a password by selecting something you can remember that has between four and 20 characters of either letters, numbers or a combination of both. No special characters or symbols are permitted.
-
6
Enter the VIN for the vehicle in the correct box and click "Submit." This number is a unique identifier for the vehicle, so the report information you receive will be for the vehicle registered to this number.
-
7
Go to the login page listed in the "Resources" section of this article and log-in using the email address you submitted during your purchase as well as the password you created. Select "My Carfax Reports" to see the reports that are available to you.
