How to Change the Name of Your Computer in Windows

Each computer has its own name that home workgroups and business networks use for the computer's network identification. This name was assigned to the computer during the initial setup of the Windows operating system. However, the computer name can be changed at any time by a user with computer administrator rights.

Click on the "Start" button and locate the "My Computer" icon in the start menu. Windows Vista and 7 users will need to locate the "Computer" option instead.

    • 6

Reboot your computer to allow the name change to take effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • When changing the name of your computer, do not change the Domain or Workgroup information. This may create issues with an existing connection to a home or business network.
