How to Remove Hairspray Residue From Hair

Remove unsightly hairspray buildup with baking soda.

If you notice that your hair has a hairspray buildup, you will need to remove it properly. Hairspray buildup can cause your scalp to become flaky, and your hair can form a greasy film. Instead of applying the hairspray in one concentrated area or close to your scalp, make sure that you apply it evenly. Wash your hair after applying hairspray to keep it from building up in your hair.

Things You'll Need

• Shampoo
• Small bowl
• 1 tbsp. baking soda
• Comb
• Conditioner

Instructions

1. Add your desired amount of shampoo to a small bowl. Typically, you will only need to add 1 to 2 tsp. of shampoo, but this will depend on the length and thickness of your hair.

2. Combine 1 tbsp. of baking soda to the shampoo.

3. Mix the baking soda and shampoo together. This will form a paste.

4. Apply the baking soda and shampoo paste to your hair. Massage it into your hair.

5. Rinse the paste from your hair. Reapply the paste to your hair if the buildup still exists. Apply the mixture with a comb for severe hairspray buildup.

6. Add a conditioner to your hair. Follow the instructions on the conditioner bottle.

Tips & Warnings

• Use apple cider vinegar if baking soda does not work. Wash your hair with your normal shampoo. Rinse the shampoo from your hair with cool water thoroughly.

• Pour 1 cup of apple cider vinegar onto your hair. Make sure you cover all areas that contain hairspray residue. Apply the conditioner to your hair to remove the apple cider smell.
