Ethernet ports on back of Linksys router

Linksys routers are devices that allow computers to connect to local area networks as well as high-speed Internet such as cable or DSL. They come in both wired and wireless versions, with wireless Linksys devices accommodating both types of connections. Computers with either a wireless card or an Ethernet network card are capable of connecting to Linksys devices. Internet access is not required as the routers can be used to create a closed local network for gaming or file sharing between computers in the same building.

Locate the Ethernet network card port on the computer.
Locate the Ethernet network card port on the computer.

Locate the Ethernet network card port on the computer. On most desktop computers this is located on the lower back of the computer. On laptops this is found on either side or the rear.

    • 2

Connect one end of the Ethernet cable to the network card port. Connect the other end of the Ethernet cable to one of the available numbered ports on the back of the Linksys device. If you do not see numbered ports, look for an Ethernet port labeled "To computer" or "Connection Out."

    • 3

Plug the router's power supply in and turn the computer on. Wait for the lights to begin blinking on the front of the router to indicate the connection is active. Proceed to Step 4 if you are connecting a computer wirelessly to a wireless Linksys router.

Right-click on the small antenna icon in the lower right of the Windows desktop on the computer (or the top right on Macs) and click on "Turn on Wireless" or "Connect to Wireless network." Select "Linksys" from the list of available networks or if you have a named network, select that name from the list and click "Connect."
