How to Replace a Hub Cap on a Chevy Cavalier

Although some Chevrolet Cavaliers came with alloy wheels, most models came with standard steel wheels covered by hubcaps (more commonly referred to as wheel covers by automakers). The Cavalier's hubcaps are not like most others; instead of being attached exclusively by the internal ring clip on the rear of the hubcap, a Cavalier hubcap has four plastic lug-nut covers, which serve as an appearance upgrade and provide additional support to the hubcaps.

Things You'll Need

• Wheel wrench
• Replacement hubcap

Instructions

1. Open the trunk, and retrieve your wheel wrench (used to loosen lug nuts). This wrench is the appropriate size for loosening and tightening the Cavalier's wheel covers.

2. Use the wheel wrench to loosen the four plastic lug-nut covers on the hubcap. These covers do not come all the way off; loosen them until no resistance is felt.

3. Insert the flat end of the wheel wrench into the edge of the hubcap. Pull the wrench handle toward you to pry the hubcap up. Work your way around the cap until it is off the wheel.

4. Line up the notch on the replacement wheel cover with the tire's valve stem. Push the wheel cover firmly against the wheel to pop it on.

5. Tighten the plastic lug-nut covers with the wheel wrench; this will keep the hubcap snug. Do not over-tighten them, or they will break.

Tips & Warnings

• If the Cavalier's wheel wrench is missing, you can use any standard lug wrench (such as a four-way wrench).
