How To Fix an XBox 360 CPU Overheating
As with most electronic devices, the Microsoft Xbox 360 can overheat if it runs continuously and is not well-ventilated. This console features an internal CPU that must be kept relatively cool to operate, as well as an external ring of light that flashes patterns of red to indicate problems with the console. Three red lights indicate system failure, which can be caused by overheating. Prevent this by cooling the system down when it first overheats.

1
Watch the ring of light on the front of the console. Red lights indicate problems with the internal CPU. The two left lights on this ring of light will flash red when the console has gotten too hot. The system will not play discs until it cools down.
-
2
Move the console to an area that is well-ventilated. Microsoft recommends you do not block any openings on the power supply or the ventilation openings of the console. Users should also not place the console in a bookcase or stereo cabinet unless those area are well-ventilated.

3
Remove any heat sources that sit close to the Xbox 360, such as portable space heaters or other electronics. Microsoft recommends that players keep the Xbox 360 away from radiators, stoves and amplifiers.
-
4
Turn the console back on to test it after giving it several minutes to cool down. If the red lights do not come back on, the Xbox 360 console can now be played.

5
Prevent future overheating by buying a device such as the Nyko Intercooler, which attaches to the back of the console and uses fans to blow hot air away from the console. You can also put a portable fan near the console to achieve a similar result.
