How to Use the Scanner on My Printer

The printer market is dominated by multi-function printers. Many printers come with integrated scanners, copiers and some come with fax machines. Figuring out how to use each component can be a headache, but manufacturers include software that helps operate every function of the printer, including the scanner function.

Instructions

    • 1

Install the manufacturer's software and drivers for your device. The software and drivers can be found on the installation CD that came with the device. If you do not have the installation CD, you can go to the manufacturer's website and access the "Support" area. There you will enter the name of your device and download the necessary software and drivers. Once you have downloaded those items, follow the installation prompts to install them.

    • 2

Plug your multi-function printer into your computer correctly. Your printer should be hooked up to your computer by a USB cable. Click on "Printers and Other Hardware" in the "Control Panel" of your computer to make sure the printer is "Online" and not "Offline." If it says "Offline," then your device is not plugged in correctly.

    • 3

      Power on the device.

    • 4

      Open the scanner bed cover.

    • 5

Lay your image or document to be scanned face-down on the scanner glass. Line up your image or document. Look at the ruler guides on the side of the scanner bed for guidance when lining up your document.

    • 6

      Close the scanner bed cover.

    • 7

Press the scanner button on your device to start your scan. The button typically has the symbol of a scanner on it. Once the scanner button is pressed, the scanner will communicate with the software you installed on your computer. The software automatically will display on your computer screen the pixels that the scanner reads, and display a preview image of the scanned item.

    • 8

Confirm that you want to permanently scan the preview image being displayed in your software when prompted.

    • 9

Save your scanned image by selecting "File" and "Save As."
