How to Draw Indian Crafts & Arts for Children
Studying Indian arts and crafts will reveal the basic shapes of particular cultural items. These forms need to be simplified for children to draw. All the basic shapes will be found in the historical arts and crafts motifs of Native American Indians: triangles for tepees and a host of geometric repeating patterns from rugs and other ornamentation. Organic shapes, such as birds, should also be incorporated into any drawing of Indian arts and crafts.

Gather photographic images to use as examples of Indian arts and crafts. Make certain that some of these images incorporate basic shapes of triangle, rectangle and circle.

Ask children to find shapes as they look at the images. Make note of repeating patterns in the arts and crafts examples.

Have children draw a straight line using a ruler, 3 inches down from the long side of their paper.

Instruct children to create their own repeating geometric pattern inspired by the Indian examples. When one row is completed, ask them to try another until the paper is full of designs. The possibilities are endless in this process.

Take another sheet of paper and have everyone draw a large circle in the center of the page.

Advise children to draw a repeating pattern around the outside edge of this circle.

Guide students to draw a very simple bird form in the center of the circle. Have examples of arts and crafts that include bird motifs, so they can see how these are often simplified.

Finish all creations with colored pencils. Encourage children to add any details they wish.
