How to Tow a Truck With an Automatic Transmission

In an automatic truck, the transmission needs to be lubricated when running. If you are towing the truck, the engine is not on so there is no oil reaching the transmission. This can cause it to seize, and you may have to replace the entire transmission. To avoid this you need to disconnect the drive shaft. The easiest way to tow an automatic truck is to use a car dolly. If this is not an option, you will have to install a tow bar onto the truck and lash the steering securely.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift the back of the truck up and support with it a jack stand. Put the truck into neutral gear.

    • 2

Remove the nuts from the rear U-clamps using a wrench and store both clamps and nuts in a safe place. Detach the drive shaft. Use electrical tape to secure the bearings and caps to the underside of the truck.

    • 3

Strap up the rear drive shaft to the exhaust or another secure place using electrical tape. This will prevent it from scraping the ground as you tow the truck.

    • 4

Secure the truck to the tow dolly. Remove the jack stand and the truck is ready to be towed.

Tips & Warnings

  • Secure the wheels using wood blocks to prevent the truck from rolling.
