What Is the Best Way to Clean Venetian Blinds in Place? thumbnail
Cleaning venetian blinds in place is a fairly simple process.

Cleaning procedures for venetian blinds fall into two categories, light and deep cleaning methods. Light cleaning methods can be conducted without dismounting the blinds or curtains. Deep or heavy cleaning procedures require dismounting followed by thoroughly washing the blinds in an enclosure such as a bathtub. Frequent light cleaning and the occasional heavy cleaning will not only make your blinds more aesthetically pleasing, but will also keep them less dusty. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

Tie back the curtains for more visibility, if curtains are mounted along with the blinds. Search over the blinds to locate any problem areas such as stickiness, stains or the infamous crayon-colored art. Use a common cleaning spray product, such as Fantastik or Windex, to remove these problem areas and dry completely.

Align the blinds into the closed position. Put on a dust-attractant glove or, less preferable, use paper towels. Prevent leaving streaks or smudges by keeping the glove dry during the cleaning process on wooden slats. Dampen the glove with water or a non-stick cleaning product for synthetic polymer or metallic slats. Wipe the glove or paper towels from the center to the edge in both directions to avoid pulling the dirt across the entire slat from one end to the other. Frequently brushing off the glove or changing paper towels will keep you from spreading dirt from one slat to another. Turn the blinds so that the other side is now visible and repeat the hand cleaning procedure.

Connect the duster brush attachment to the vacuum hose; using the attachment will help prevent scratching or chipping of any slats. Move the brush along each slat from the center to the edge in each direction. Hold the opposite end of slat from the direction that you are brushing towards; this will hold the slat in place while you are cleaning it. Turn the blinds so that the other side is now visible and repeat the vacuum cleaning procedure.
