How to Connect an AV Cable

How to Connect an AV Cable thumbnail
RCA cables come with three different plugs.

AV cables, also known as RCA cables, confuse many people, especially when the color of the plug doesn't match the connector's color. These cables transmit analog audio and video into a display. If you try to connect an audio plug into a video connector, your display will not work properly and you probably will not hear any sound coming from the system. To fix this, you have to arrange the plugs on the cable properly. A standard AV cable has three plugs.

Instructions

    • 1

Connect the AV cable's yellow plug into the destination device's connector labeled "Video" in the group of connectors labeled "Input."

    • 2

Connect the red or black plug into the destination device's connector labeled "R" or "Right" in the same group of connectors.

Repeat this process on the source device, but use its group of connectors labeled "Output" this time.

Tips & Warnings

  • Some AV cables that come with cameras have only one plug on one end and three on the other. If you want to connect your camera through AV to another device, use the single connector on your camera and the three connectors on the destination device.
