A remote procedure call (RPC) server is a Windows machine that hosts software you share within a computer "workgroup." A workgroup is a networking architecture used in small home networks. There is limited security functionality, but it's a convenient way to share files among computers in the home or small office. To change the workgroup name on an RPC server, the computer's system properties have to be edited.

Instructions

      Click the Windows "Start" button and select "Run." In the text box, enter "sysdm.cpl" and press the "OK" button. This will open the system properties window.

      Click the "Computer Name" tab. In this window, click the "Change" button. This will open a dialog box where you can change the workgroup name for the RPC server.

      Enter a new workgroup name in the text box labeled "Workgroup." Click the "OK" button. The Windows operating system will prompt you to restart the machine. Select "Restart" for the changes to take effect.

Tips & Warnings

  • When changing the workgroup name for a RPC server, other machines on the network that do not have the same workgroup settings will be unable to see the computer when browsing the network.
