How to Build a Wall for a Doghouse

How to Build a Wall for a Doghouse thumbnail
Building doghouse walls takes just a bit of know-how.

Once you know how to build one wall for a doghouse, you can build the rest of the walls---it is a simple matter of adjusting the measurements if you want a shorter front and back and longer sides. If you want a perfectly square doghouse, the measurements won't change--each wall will be cut to the same size. Larger doghouses (wall longer than 24 inches) will need studs for support.

Things You'll Need

  • 2-by-4-inch boards
  • Plywood
  • Nails
  • Hammer
  • Saw
  • Screws

Instructions

    • 1

Cut the two 2-by-4-inch boards to the desired length of the wall, using the saw. The two cut boards are the top and bottom of the wall. Lay the boards aside.

    • 2

Cut two boards the height of the wall. If the wall is longer than 24 inches, cut additional boards, so that you have a 2-by-4-inch board every 16 inches.

    • 3

Lay the bottom board on the narrow side. Line up the boards cut for the height and the studs along the ground, with their butt-ends against the 4-inch side of the bottom board.

    • 4

Screw or nail the vertical boards (height) into the bottom board, through the bottom of the bottom board, using a screwdriver or hammer. Use three screws or nails for each board. Alternate the screws or nails so that they form a triangle, if you were to connect them with lines.

    • 5

Stand the frame up, so that the vertical (height) boards are up. Lay the top board over the top of the vertical boards. Screw or nail through the top board, using three nails or screws per vertical board. Alternate the nails or screws to form a triangle.

    • 6

Measure the frame from outside to outside vertically and horizontally, using a measuring tape. Cut the plywood to the new measurements. Screw the plywood onto the frame, using a screw every 6 to 8 inches.
