When you want to make your riding lawn mower go faster or even convert it into a racing lawn mower, you will need to make several adjustments to the engine. Riding lawn mower engines have some safety components and features that prevent the lawn mower from going too fast, as running your engine at high speeds wears the engine out more quickly. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Remove the hood from your riding lawn mower. You want maximum airflow to your engine and a hood restricts this airflow. Unscrew the bolts around the base perimeter of the hood with the proper sized wrench.

    • 2

Inspect the muffler on the riding lawn mower engine. You don't want any cracks or holes that weren't already in the muffler, as these will minimize back pressure in your engine and reduce speed. Replace the muffler with a new one if needed.

    • 3

Remove the engine governor. The governor is a flap next to the flywheel on top of your engine; when the flywheel moves too fast, the governor flap blows out and reduces the engine speed.

    • 4

Unscrew the flywheel housing with the proper sized wrenches. There will be bolts around the perimeter of the flywheel housing cover on top of the engine. Pull the cover off.

    • 5

Locate the governor on the side of the flywheel. Unscrew the single bolt holding the governor flap to the engine frame. Unhook the two springs hooking the governor flap to the carburetor/throttle adjuster. Replace the flywheel housing on the top of the engine and bolt it into place.

Add a higher octane fuel to your engine gas tank as it burns cleaner and faster. Use a 92 octane gasoline.
