How to Make a USB-to-RS485 Converter

By Bryan Roberts

You can use the RS485 cable to connect various devices, such as printers and scanners, to your computer. If you do not have a computer with an RS485 port, you can still connect these devices to your computer by converting the RS485 signal to a USB signal. With a few pieces of equipment, you can construct your own USB-to-RS485 converter cable.

Step 1

Connect one end of your RS485 cable to the port on your USB-to-RS485 cable. The adapter cable is now constructed.

Step 2

Connect the RS485 end of your new cable to the port on your RS485 device.

Step 3

Connect the USB end of the cable to an available USB port on your computer. Your devices are now successfully connected.
