How to Wind a Singer Bobbin

How to Wind a Singer Bobbin thumbnail
Wind your bobbin correctly on your Singer sewing machine.

A bobbin is a small spool of thread that sits beneath the needle in a sewing machine. The needle thread and the bobbin thread lock together to create the sewing machine stitch. Bobbins must be wound correctly to keep the correct tension on the thread, which makes a smooth stitch. If you've forgotten how to wind your bobbin, or if you bought a used machine, the procedure is simple. Wind your bobbin correctly and you'll be back sewing in about three minutes.

Instructions

    • 1

Lift up the presser foot. This ensures that the feed dogs don't engage while you are winding the bobbin.

    • 2

Turn the wheel until the needle is at its highest point. Loosen the wheel knob located on the top of the right side of your Singer machine. You will find a knob in the center and a larger ring outside of it. Hold the ring with one hand while turning the inside knob toward you until it is loose. This prevents the needle from going up and down while you wind the bobbin.

    • 3

Place a spool of thread onto the spool pin. Lead the thread through the bobbin tension holder on the top left of your machine. This is a little disc below which you wind the thread. It keeps the thread just tight enough to wind the bobbin smoothly.

    • 4

Push the end of the thread up through one of the holes on the outside rim of the bobbin. Thread the hole from the inside of the bobbin toward the outside. You should end up with a thread tail on the outside rim of the bobbin.

    • 5

Place the bobbin onto the bobbin holder on top of your machine. Push the bobbin holder over to the side to snap the bobbin in place. Make sure that the thread leads out and away from the bobbin.

    • 6

Push on the foot pedal gently to make the bobbin holder turn. Hold onto the thread end for the first few turns as thread winds around the bobbin. Then wind the bobbin fully, and clip the thread from the spool.

Tips & Warnings

  • Slip tiny ponytail holders onto bobbins to keep the thread from unwinding when not being used.
