How to Sync an iPod to a Media Player
Although iTunes is the default media player for the iPod, you can sync your iPod to other media players that are free to use and provide the same features as iTunes. These media managers are commonly found on software download sites such as Download.com, and also directly on the product's official site. Due to some compatibility issues, you may have to install a plug-in or add-on for the third-party media player in order for it to properly sync.

Use iTunes. As the default media player for your iPod, you will experience the least amount of software conflicts during synchronization and can update your iPod's software whenever updates are released from Apple. To sync, simply plug the wide, flat end of the USB or FireWire cable into your iPod, and plug the other end into your computer's USB or FireWire port. Double-click the iTunes icon on your desktop to run the program, and click the iPod tab in the iTunes sidebar. Your iPod will automatically sync to iTunes.

Use Songbird. This program is similar to iTunes, as it allows you to manage your music, create playlists and purchase music from its online store. You'll need to download the iPod device support plug-in to enable iPod synchronization. Once the plug-in is downloaded and installed, run the program and connect your iPod to your computer using the FireWire or USB cable. Click the iPod tab in the Songbird sidebar, and click the "Music" tab. Select "All Music" and click the "Sync" button in the upper-right corner of the program window.

Use MGTEK dopisp for Windows Media Player. MGTEK Dopisp is a plug-in for Windows Media Players that allows you to sync your iPod to the program, since WMP is not compatible with iPods by default. To sync your iPod, first download and install the plug-in, followed by running WMP. Plug the iPod FireWire or USB cable into your computer's USB or FireWire port to connect the iPod to the computer. Drag and drop the songs you wish to sync to the "Sync List" in WMP, and click the "Start Sync" button to transfer the songs to your iPod.
