How to Attach a Fly Line to a Backing

Learn how to properly tie your fly lines for the best fly fishing results.

Fly fishing is a style of fishing used almost entirely on fast running rivers and streams. The fly lures represent small flies and nymphs and are a favorite food source among the trout that flourish in many North American rivers. Fly fishing also requires a great deal of practice before you can be sure of your casting skills. In fact, learning how to tie a fly line and attach the backing is a process unique to fly fishing and requires practice as well. Many methods for tying knots for attaching backing to fly line leaders are used, such as Albright or nail knots, but the easiest way to attach the backing is with a simple overhand knot.

Instructions

1. Wrap the tag-end of the fly backing around the spool twice, then bring the tag-end out, in between the set of reel pillars. Tie an overhand knot at the end of the tag line and pull to tighten.

2. Take the tag line and tie it in an overhand knot around the standing leader part of the line. Tighten the knot into place securely.

3. Pull on the standing leader until the overhand knots draw down flush against the reel hub. After the knots are on the hub, spool the line down tightly.

Tips & Warnings

• Ensure that the line is spooled tight against the reel hub, otherwise the line can unspool completely while casting the leader.
