Zipped files are compressed in order to reduce their size so that they take up only limited space on your computer or portable storage devices. Adding a password to the zipped file ensures that the files are protected from unwanted people accessing them. Windows has a built-in function to compress the file and add a password to it so that you won't need any third-party software programs. It is simple to do and only takes a few minutes to compress and then add a password, to any file on your computer.

Instructions

    • 1

Go to the file folder that contains the file you want to compress. Open the folder so that the file is visible.

    • 2

Right-click on the file and then click "Compress." Wait while Windows compresses the file.

    • 3

Add a password to the compressed file. Open the ZIP file by double-clicking on it. Click on "File > Add a Password" in the next window. Type in the desired password in the "Password" box. Confirm the password by typing it again in the "Confirm Password" box. Click "OK."
