How to Groom a Saint Bernard

Saint Bernards do a majority of their shedding during spring.

Saint Bernards are a large breed of dog. They can weigh between 120 and 180 pounds and stand between 26 and 30 inches tall, according to Just Dog Breeds. They can have short hair coats or long hair coats that are white and reddish brown. They don't require an excessive amount of grooming, but regular maintenance is needed.

Instructions

    • 1

Brush your Saint Bernard with a stiff bristled brush twice a week. Start from the top of the dog's head and brush to the end of the tail. Make sure to also brush the hair on the dog's chest, sides and stomach.

    • 2

Increase the amount of brushing to once a day during spring because this is when the dog will do most of its shedding, according to Just Dog Breeds.

    • 3

Use a rake comb on the dog's tail and undercoat, since this is where fur will mat together and form knots. The rake has long rounded pins that should be place at the base of the knot and pulled through gently.

    • 4

Bathe your Saint Bernard twice a month by soaking the dog's coat in warm water. Pour a small amount of dog shampoo onto the coat and work it into a lather all over the fur. Rinse out the shampoo and apply whitening shampoo on the white fur only. Rinse the whitening shampoo off and dry your dog with a towel or a blow dyer on a low heat setting.

    • 5

Use dog clippers to trim the dog's nails once a month. Only clip the very tip of the nail off so you don't hurt your dog.

    • 6

Trim any stray hairs that grow on the bottom of the Saint Bernard's feet. Carefully trim hairs that appear to grow between the pads of the dog's feet.
