How to Hang a Wicker Egg Chair

A wicker egg chair is shaped as the name implies, like an egg. It's an offshoot of the original ball or bubble chair and the precursor of the hammock chair. The entire chair hangs from a chain and is suspended in midair. The narrow end is at the the top. One side is open, and a seat cushion is positioned on the bottom, wider end. Wicker egg chairs can be hung outside from a tree branch or purchased with their own floor stand, but they are often hung inside the home from the ceiling. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Locate the ceiling joist from which you will hang the egg chair. Most ceiling joists are positioned 16, 18 or 24 inches on center. An electrical box for a ceiling fixture or ceiling fan will almost always be attached to a ceiling joist.

    • 2

Unscrew the decorative ceiling plate and look inside the electrical box to see where it's mounted to the ceiling joist and what direction the joist is running.

    • 3

Measure 16 inches from the joist to the right or left and tap in a small nail to see if the nail goes into another ceiling joist. If not, repeat by measuring 18 inches and then 24 inches until the next joist is located. Once the distance from joist to joist is determined, use this increment to measure across the room and locate the joist from which you can hang your egg chair.

    • 4

Make a mark on the ceiling where the wicker egg chair will be located. If you plan to hang the chair in a corner, leave at least 12 inches of space from each wall.

    • 5

Locate the very center of the joist where you plan to insert the eye screw from which the chair will be hung. To find one outside edge of the joist, tap in a small nail at 1/16-inch increments until it makes contact with the joist. Measure an additional 3/4 inch beyond that first contact point and make a mark. This is the center of the joist (which is 1.5 inches wide).

    • 6

Place a drill bit in an electric drill that is 1/16 to 1/8 inches smaller in diameter than that of the eye screw. Keeping the drill bit perpendicular to the ceiling at all times, drill 5 inches straight up into the center of the ceiling joist.

    • 7

Place the tip of the eye screw in the drilled hole and start turning it. When it becomes too difficult to turn the eye screw with just hands alone, insert a long screwdriver through the eye of the eye screw. Holding it with both hands parallel to the ceiling, twist the screwdriver to continue turning the screw all the way in until no thread can be seen.

    • 8

Hook one end of a S-hook through the eye hook. Hook the chain coming off the top of the wicker egg chair to the opposite end of the S-hook.

Tips & Warnings

  • If children are going to play in the chair, remove all breakables from the general area in case the chair swings wildly.

  • The first time you sit in the chair, do so carefully to ensure the hanging system can take the full weight of an adult.
