How to Change old Electrical Outlets
Having an outlet that no longer works is frustrating, and calling an electrician to replace it will be expensive. The good news is that replacing an outlet yourself is simple enough, even if you are not handy. New outlets can be found at any home improvement or hardware store. You will have a new outlet in no time and save yourself money in the process. Does this Spark an idea?

Turn of all electricity to the circuit the outlet is on. Test the problem outlet as well as other working outlets nearby to ensure the electricity is off. Do this by plugging a lamp or other electrical device into the outlet to test for power.

Remove the center screw that holds the cover plate. Pull the plate loose and set it to the side.

Remove the two screws that hold the outlet to the wall. Pull the outlet away from the wall to allow access to the wires.

Loosen the screws on the back of the outlet and remove the wires under the screws. Discard the outlet.

Use the wire strippers to remove 1/4 inch of insulation at the end of each wire.

Form the end of the wires into a small hook shape. Hook the white wire under the new outlet's silver screw and tighten the screw down. Do the same with the black or colored wire under the brass-colored screw.

Push the new outlet into the wall and replace the top and bottom screws. Replace the outlet cover.

Turn the electricity back on and use a lamp to test the outlet to ensure it is working.

Tips & Warnings
Do not let anyone else turn the electricity back on until you're done. Place a sign at the breaker box as a reminder.
