Swaying into the ball can cause you to mishit the ball.

Swaying is an unnecessary sideways movement in your hips in your golf swing. Typically, you can sway either off the ball or into the ball. Either way, swaying in the backswing can cause a weak downswing, thus causing you to mishit the ball. One of the most prevalent causes of a sway in your golf swing is locking your back knee. There are some changes to your setup that can help eliminate swaying in your backswing.

Instructions

    • 1

Line up your shot like you normally would. You can make adjustments to your setup after you've setup normally.

    • 2

Point the inside of your right knee at the inside of your left knee quickly to create a rocking motion. This may feel awkward the first few times you try it, but it will help eliminate sway and other unnecessary lateral movement.

    • 3

Take a swing immediately after pointing your right knee into your left knee. The rocking motion should eliminate sway in your backswing. Observe the flight of the ball to determine whether the result of the rocking motion was successful.

    • 4

Adjust the angle in which you point your right knee into your left knee to find the optimal angle. Continue to practice this starter move before you take your golf swings and your sway will soon be eliminated.
