How to Add a Screen Saver to Windows XP

A screen saver is an animation file displayed on a computer screen while it's idle and activated after a set period of inactivity. Windows XP comes with preinstalled screen saver files, but you can also download screen savers from the web (files usually come in a ZIP format). Some of those have small installer programs that add a screen saver automatically, but most have to be added manually.

Things You'll Need

Instructions

    • 1

Double-click the downloaded ZIP file to automatically launch either WinRAR or WinZIP, which will automatically decompress the file.

    • 2

Right-click the screen saver file (with SCR file extension) and select "Copy."

    • 3

Click the "Start" menu, select "My Computer," double-click the "Windows" folder and then the "System32" folder. Right-click anywhere in a blank space and select "Paste." The screen saver is now added to the existing XP screen savers.
