How to Use a Scanner for Vector Art

How to Use a Scanner for Vector Art thumbnail
Scanners can import your sketches for editing.

Vector graphics use geometric shapes to create image files that are often very small but can be infinitely expanded without any loss of resolution or quality. If you like to sketch images, it is possible to use a scanner combined with any raster graphics program, such as GIMP, Photoshop or Photoshop Elements, to create something that looks like vector art.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the image that you have drawn onto the surface of the scanner. Use your scanner software to import the image onto your computer and save it as a JPEG or BMP. Make sure that you set the resolution to at least 600 dpi to get a quality scan, or you may lose some of the details.

    • 2

Open your graphics program. Select "File" and click "Open." Browse to and open the image you scanned in.

    • 3

Use the "Duplicate Layer" function to create a copy of the background layer. Reduce this layer's "Opacity" to make it transparent (a setting of 40 percent should work).

    • 4

Click on the "New Layer" button to create a new layer between the two copies of the sketch. Use the "Brush" tool to create a shape corresponding to the overall outer shape of the drawing, then use the "Paint Bucket" tool to fill this area with your choice of color.

    • 5

Repeat the previous step to add finer details (such as eyes or hair) and other colors. Use only one color for each layer shape.

    • 6

Select "File" and click "Save As." In the dialog box that pops up, name your file and choose the file type. While a GIF will produce the smallest file size, a PNG will preserve the shape best.
