How to Be a Notary Public in Colorado

To become a Notary Public in Colorado, you must complete an application with the Colorado Secretary of State. Applications may be downloaded online and submitted online or by mail. Applicants can save $10 by e-filing the application online. No classes or training is required to become a Notary Public in Colorado, but you will have to become familiar with Colorado's Notary Law. You also must be 18, a resident of Colorado, and have no previous felony convictions.

Instructions

    • 1

Read and understand the Colorado Notary law. You must do this before you can apply for a notary commission. (See Resources for Notary Law web address.)

    • 2

E-file an application online at: http://www.sos.state.co.us/NotaryPublic/apply.do. An online application will require your legal name, address, phone number, email address, and citizenship status. You will also be required to pay a fee. Alternatively, you may download and complete the application to send by mail. The application can be found at: www.sos.state.co.us/pubs/notary/notary_app_instructions.pdf.

    • 3

Print the completed application, even if e-filing, to have it notarized by a current notary. A small fee will be charged for this.

    • 4

Make a copy of both sides of your state-issued identification, include a check or money order for $25 unless you paid the $15 fee to e-file, and return it with your notarized application to:

      Colorado Secretary of State
      Notary Program
      1700 Broadway, Suite 200
      Denver, CO 80290

    • 5

Allow three to five weeks to process your application for both e-filing and applications submitted by mail.

    • 6

Wait for the email message from the Colorado Secretary of State verifying your comission, and follow the link to print your official certificate online.

    • 7

Show your certificate to an office supplier to obtain an official notary seal or stamp.
