How to Be a Notary Public in Colorado
To become a Notary Public in Colorado, you must complete an application with the Colorado Secretary of State. Applications may be downloaded online and submitted online or by mail. Applicants can save $10 by e-filing the application online. No classes or training is required to become a Notary Public in Colorado, but you will have to become familiar with Colorado's Notary Law. You also must be 18, a resident of Colorado, and have no previous felony convictions.

Read and understand the Colorado Notary law. You must do this before you can apply for a notary commission. (See Resources for Notary Law web address.)

E-file an application online at: http://www.sos.state.co.us/NotaryPublic/apply.do. An online application will require your legal name, address, phone number, email address, and citizenship status. You will also be required to pay a fee. Alternatively, you may download and complete the application to send by mail. The application can be found at: www.sos.state.co.us/pubs/notary/notary_app_instructions.pdf.

Print the completed application, even if e-filing, to have it notarized by a current notary. A small fee will be charged for this.

Make a copy of both sides of your state-issued identification, include a check or money order for $25 unless you paid the $15 fee to e-file, and return it with your notarized application to:

Allow three to five weeks to process your application for both e-filing and applications submitted by mail.

Wait for the email message from the Colorado Secretary of State verifying your comission, and follow the link to print your official certificate online.

Show your certificate to an office supplier to obtain an official notary seal or stamp.
