AARP (formerly known as the Association for the Advancement of Retired Persons ) is an organization created for persons age 50 and older. Its goal is to provide information, services and advocacy for AARP members at or nearing retirement age. While AARP does not directly provide supplemental health insurance, it does contract with United Healthcare, allowing eligible people to obtain Medigap supplemental health insurance from AARP.

      Determine eligibility for AARP supplemental insurance. You must be 65 or older and eligible for Medicare Part B to qualify for supplemental health insurance through AARP. Insurance rates and available Medigap plans depend on your age and residence. Visit the AARP supplemental health insurance home page (a link is provided in the References section) and enter your state, ZIP code, date of birth and the date you became eligible for Medicare Part B to confirm eligibility.

      View supplemental insurance plan options. View available plans by clicking the "Available Plans" link in the message box at the right side of the screen.

      Get rate information for available plans by selecting the "Get a Quote" link.

      Choose a plan that suits your needs and select the "Apply Now" link, then register as a new AARP Supplemental Health Insurance user or log in to your account if you previously registered. After logging in or registering a new user account, follow onscreen instructions to sign up for AARP supplemental health insurance.

Tips & Warnings

  • If you are not yet 65 but qualify for Medicare for disability reasons, or if you have questions pertaining to plans or coverage, call the AARP customer service department at 866-270-8022 to discuss available options for obtaining supplemental health insurance.

  • You will receive an additional premium discount by electing to pay monthly premiums via automatic deductions from your checking account. A discount is also available when both you and your spouse obtain supplemental health insurance.
