How to Replace a Vent Hose on a Dryer

Maintaining a working vent hose from a dryer is critical to the dryer's safe operation and effectiveness in drying clothes. Dryer duct hoses will wear out over time and become clogged with dryer lint. Replacing the hose with a more modern, flexible aluminum hose will not only keep the air moving freely, but it will help prevent lint buildup and potential fire hazards. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Move the dryer away from the wall and unplug it from its power outlet. Use the screwdriver to loosen the screws on the clamps that attach the existing dryer hose to the rear of the dryer and the wall vent. Remove the clamps, pull the hose loose at each end, and discard the hose.

    • 2

Insert one end of the new aluminum hose onto the wall vent. Wrap a hose clamp from the kit around the hose where it slides over the vent. Tighten the hose clamp to secure the connection to the wall vent.

    • 3

Stretch the hose to its full length and measure what is needed to make the connection to the rear of the dryer. Use the tin snips to cut away any excess hose.

    • 4

Slide the remaining end of the dryer hose over the dryer exhaust vent. Wrap the remaining hose clamp around the connection and tighten it with the screwdriver.

    • 5

Move the dryer back into its usual operating position. Plug the dryer into the outlet. Turn on the dryer and test its operation. Look around behind the dryer and make sure the air is flowing freely through the new hose.

Tips & Warnings

  • Maintaining a regular cleaning schedule will increase the dryer hose's life span and the dryer's performance.

  • Do not overtighten the hose clamps or they could crush the aluminum vents on the dryer and wall.

  • Avoid using plastic or rubber hoses; they can be a fire hazard if not rated for dryer use.

  • Do not use thin foil vent hoses that aren't rated for dryer use.
