How to Remove Small Tree Stumps

Removing tree stumps can be easy with the proper tools.

Removal of any tree leaves unsightly stumps behind. Not only are these stumps eyesores to your lawn, but they make tasks such as mowing difficult. They can also create tripping hazards. Proper removal of stumps is necessary to keep your lawn accessible and in ship-shape. You can easily remove small tree stumps and restore your lawn's beauty.

Things You'll Need

• Digging spade
• Landscape bar
• Axe

Instructions

1. Dig a trench around the stump you intend to remove using a digging spade. The trench should be about six to eight inches from the perimeter of the stump. The purpose of the trench is to reveal the underlying roots so they can be broken, allowing you to remove the stump. Dig the trench until you see the roots.

2. Chop all of the visible roots with the axe. Use caution when using the axe, as it needs to be very sharp to cut through the roots.

3. Insert the landscaping bar underneath the stump once all of the roots have been chopped. Work your way around the stump prying upward on the stump to loosen and break any roots that were out of reach of the chopping axe.

4. Remove the stump from its hole by using the landscaping bar. Reinsert the landscaping bar underneath the stump, pry upward and lift the small stump out of the hole.
