Refill Instructions for DeskJet Ink Cartridges

The HP DeskJet printers use a few different ink cartridges such as #60, #75 and #40. All the HP DeskJet refill instructions are the same, though the ink amounts may be slightly different. The HP ink refill kits will come with everything that you need to fill the cartridge up to ten times. It should only take about 15 minutes to complete the refilling process.

Instructions

    • 1

Place a piece of paper toweling down on a table. Remove the label from the top of the empty ink cartridge. Take the toothpick and insert it into the fill holes on the color ink cartridge to tell what color each hole has in it. The colors will be magenta, cyan and yellow.

    • 2

Remove the ink and syringes from the refill kit. The color kit will have the three colors and three syringes, one for each color. The black kit will have one ink bottle and one syringe.

    • 3

Insert the needle into the ink bottle and pull back on the plunger to withdraw the ink. On the HP Deskjet ink cartridges, the color ink will be between 4 ml and 6 ml. The black will be between 10 ml and 15 ml. Each kit will tell you how much ink the cartridge should use.

    • 4

Insert the needle into the fill hole and slowly push down on the plunger. As the ink is dispensed, you may see some ink oozing out of the hole. Stop filling and wipe up the excess ink with a damp cloth. If the cartridge was not completely empty, it will take less ink. Fill each color fill hole with the correct color.

    • 5

Place the filled ink cartridge into the printer carriage and run two to three test pages before continuing with any print tasks.
