How to Create a CD to Boot Win XP SP2 for Recovery Installation
Creating a bootable Windows XP disc with Service Pack 2 can allow you to perform a full recovery installation of your computer in the event of system failure. This will save you the trouble of having to re-download endless product updates and other files from Microsoft after completing the installation, because all needed files will already be on your custom CD.
Things You'll Need
- Blank CD
- Windows XP CD
- Service Pack 2 installation file
- Image extractor program
- CD burning program

Place the Windows XP CD in the CD drive.

Open the "My Computer" menu. Click on "Tools," open "Folder Options," click on the "View" tab, check the box next to "Show Hidden Files," and clear the box next to "Hide Protected Files."

Right-click on "Start," select "Explore," click on the "C" drive, right-click, select "New," select "Folder," and name the folder "XP." Create another folder titled "SP2."

Copy all files from the Windows XP CD into the "XP" folder and copy the SP2 installation file to the "SP2" folder.

Open "Start," select "Run," type "cmd," press "Enter," and in the following commands in order (pressing "Enter" after each): "cd \," "cd sp2," "xpsp2.exe -x:c:\sp2," "cd i386," "cd update," "update -s:c:\xp."

Open your image extractor program, click on the drive letter of your CD drive, and copy the ISO file to the "XP" directory.

Open your CD burning program, select "Boot CD," select the boot image as the file extracted in step six, and burn the contents of the "XP" directory to CD.
