How to Calculate Feet to Yards
There are 3 feet in a yard. Converting from feet into yards is therefore little more than dividing by 3. The calculation can get more complex when you accurately address significant figures, don't have feet written in decimal form or must convert more than one dimension.
Instructions

1
Convert the measure in feet to decimal form. For example, 4 feet 3 inches becomes 4.25 feet because 3 inches is a quarter of a foot.
-
2
Divide by 3. This gives you the number of yards.
-
-

Round to the number of significant figures that you started with in Step 1. Continuing with the above example: 4.25 has three significant figures. 4.25 divided by 3 equals 1.417. Round this to two significant figures to get 1.42 yards.
