How to Make a Yarn Fringe
Fringe is the perfect finishing touch for many different types of projects. Adding a fringe allows you to not only enhance the look of your knitted or crocheted item, but to hide any flaws in your edges as well. You can add fringe anywhere there is an edge--including the ends or sides of a scarf, the bottom and sleeves of a sweater or the side edges of a blanket or afghan.
No matter where you decide to place your fringe, the basic technique for adding it is the same.

1
Wrap the yarn repeatedly around the book or DVD case. The more times you wrap the yarn, the thicker your fringe will be.
-
2
Use scissors to cut across the wrapped yarn to create evenly-sized pieces.

3
Place the item to be fringed right side up on a flat work surface. Insert the crochet hook through one of the edge stitches. Pass the crochet hook from back to front, with the hook end protruding from the front of the piece.

Select one to three pieces of yarn, depending on how thick you would like your finished fringe to be. Fold these pieces in half, and use the crochet hook to pull them to the back of the piece. Pass the ends of your fringe through the loop that has formed and pull to secure.

5
Repeat this process for the entire length of the area you wish to fringe, then use scissors to trim the fringe to a shorter length if desired.

Tips & Warnings
Your fringe can be made with the yarn you used for the main body of your project or with a complementary or contrasting yarn, depending on the look you want.
When you use the crochet hook to pull the fringe through the piece, don't pull it all the way through--you need to form a loop and pass the ends through to secure the fringe.
