Instructions

    • 1

Go through files and papers held in the filing cabinet. Throw away any outdated information. Files and papers that are rarely used, but may be needed in the future should be stored in file boxes.

    • 2

Label the file boxes and store them in a closet or in a storage cabinet. This will open up space in the file cabinet, making it less cluttered.

    • 3

Determine which drawers files will go into. Label each drawer with coordinating areas of business. For example, three different drawers could be labeled "Taxes", "Clients", and "Media".

    • 4

Organize the files and papers for each drawer alphabetically or by type of file. Attach labeled stick-on color tabs to file separators. File separators can simply be an empty file folder.

    • 5

Insert the files and file separators into each drawer. Ensure that the color tabs are visible when the drawer is opened. This will make locating files easier.
