Chain link fence

Wind chimes add a whimsical element to your landscape. The tinkling sounds of clinking metal or the resonant clang of wooden poles enhances the atmosphere in a garden or yard or on a patio. Wind chimes can also add a decorative element to a fence line. Make single strand wind chimes to hang on a chain link fence to bring color and music to your property's borders. The open air design of a chain link fence will allow the wind to move the chimes from both sides.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a 3 foot length of fishing line. Thread a craft bell to the center of the line. Craft bells come in a variety of shapes and designs, including miniature cow bells and "jingle" bells.

    • 2

Hold the ends of the fishing line together so that they are even. The craft bell should be dangling at the end of the line.

    • 3

Thread two 4 mm glass beads over both strands of fishing line to the top of the craft bell. Thread one 8mm shell bead over both ends of the line to the glass beads. Craft stores and online retailers offer a wide variety of glass and shell beads.

    • 4

Continue to thread two glass beads followed by one shell bead for the length of the doubled fishing line, less 4 inches. Leave 4 inches of double line free at the end of the strand so you can tie the wind chimes onto the chain link fence.

    • 5

Tie the beaded wind chime strand to the horizontal metal rod running across the top of the chain link fence. Cover the knot with a drop of clear waterproof adhesive. When the wind catches the strand, the glass beads and the craft bell will create music as they move against the fence.

    • 6

Repeat Steps 1 through 5 to make as many individual wind chime strands as you would like to hang on your chain link fence.

Tips & Warnings
