How to Fertilize Fescue Before Winter

Fescue is a considered a cool season grass, which means that its primary growth season is during the winter. Fescue is shade tolerant and drought resistant, making it a good grass to grow in most areas of the United States. Although it typically goes dormant during the summer, it remains green all year. It is a good companion grass to pair with warm weather grasses that thrive in summer. Fertilize fescue grass in the fall before it begins its major growth. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a granular fertilizer to the fescue grass in late September, just as the grass begins to grow. Use an all-purpose grass fertilizer, such as 16-4-8. Pour the fertilizer into a fertilizer drop spreader and set the spreader dial to the correct application rate setting. Refer to the fertilizer instructions to determine the correct amount for your lawn size. Walk along the entire surface of the lawn in rows while dispensing the fertilizer.

Apply lime to the fescue grass once per year in the fall, at the same time as the first fertilizer application. Apply the lime at a rate of 20 pounds per 1,000 square feet. Pour the lime into the drop spreader just as you did with the fertilizer. Walk along the entire surface of the lawn with the drop spreader held in front to dispense the lime onto the lawn.

Wait until November to apply a second application of granular all-purpose 16-4-8 fertilizer. Pour the same amount of fertilizer into the drop spreader just as you did during the first fertilizer application. Walk over the lawn using the drop spreader to dispense the fertilizer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Fescue should also be fertilized two additional times, once in February and again in late April.

  • Fertilizer and lime are both available at home improvement and garden centers.

  • Some fertilizers advise watering the grass immediately after fertilizing. If this is recommended, use a garden hose or sprinkler to wet the grass.
