How to Make Ceramic Tile Mortar Look Brand New
Ceramic tile can remain stain-free virtually forever with the proper care. The grout mortar between the tiles, however, will eventually stain. Grout is essentially cement, and it absorbs stains. Cleaning the grout lines will transform the look of the whole tiled area. One of the most effective cleaners is oxygen bleach, a non-toxic compound that uses oxygen molecules to lift stains out of mortar. Does this Spark an idea?
Things You'll Need
- Household cleaner
- Oxygen bleach powder
- Bowl
- Spoon
- Rubber spatula
- Toothbrush
Instructions

-
1
Use household cleaner to get the tile and grout completely free of grime and surface dirt. Rinse it well.
-
2
Mix oxygen bleach powder with water in a bowl, adding enough of both to make a thick paste. Generally, use equal portions of water and powder to make the paste, adjusting the ratios as needed to get the paste to the consistency of thick oatmeal. Start by making about 2 cups of paste. (You can make more if that isn't enough.)

-
3
Spread the oxygen bleach onto the grout lines, using a rubber spatula, covering the lines completely and forming a thick layer over them.
-
4
Allow the paste to sit on the grout lines for 30 minutes. Add more paste as necessary during this time if the first layer soaks into the lines, so it remains covered.
-
5
Thoroughly scrub the paste with an old toothbrush. Re-apply the paste in another layer and let it work for another 30 minutes.
-
6
Re-scrub the grout. Rinse thoroughly.
