How to Create a Hanging Indent in Word 2007

Word 2007 has numerous formatting options, such as line spacing, margin width and indents. The program includes various types of indents that are created using the horizontal ruler above the document, allowing users to make left, right and hanging indents, among others. The hanging indent indents every line after the first. Creating one in a paragraph in Word 2007 is a simple process that can be accomplished in a few clicks.

Instructions

    • 1

Place the cursor in the paragraph that you wish to create a hanging indent for.

    • 2

View the ruler, if necessary, by selecting the "View" tab and placing a check in the box next to "Ruler" in the "Show/Hide" section.

    • 3

Drag the "Hanging indent" marker to the right of the "First indent marker" on the ruler. Dragging this marker creates the hanging indent wherever you drag it to.

Tips & Warnings

  • Hold your pointer over the indent markers on the ruler if you are confused as to which one creates the hanging indent. The top marker reads "First line indent," and the bottom one reads "Left indent." If you hold your pointer in the middle of these two, this is the Hanging indent marker.
