A DSL Modem

A 2Wire modem is a hardware device that allows a computer (or multiple computers) to connect to the Internet via DSL. In many cases, DSL companies provide a 2Wire modem to its customers, usually as part of the initial "welcome package" that also contains documentation, phone filters and the required cables (RJ-11 telephone and RJ-45 Ethernet). 2Wire modems are platform independent and work equally well with Macs, PCs and UNIX machines and also are found on the shelves of computer retailers. 2Wire is a privately held San Jose-based tech firm founded in 1998.

Choose "PPPoA" as your connection method and then enter your DSL service user name and password (both included with your initial DSL package) in the appropriate fields. Similar to the key code in Step 4, contact your ISP if you don't have this information handy. Both your user name and password are case sensitive, so confirm you have keyed them in correctly.

Create a password and enter in the field, and then enter it again to confirm. Record this password in a secure location, as you will have to reset the modem and repeat the process in the event it's forgotten.

Tips & Warnings

  • Disabling "SSID Broadcast" effectively hides your wireless network.

  • Don't bother using the enclosed CD; it mostly contains redundant utilities, some of which may interfere with your PC's settings.

  • Failing to install the DSL on other phone extensions can result in diminished DSL signal strength.
