Stenography is the practice of learning shorthand. Shorthand is a way of writing abbreviating words using symbols in order to write my quickly and efficiently. Professions that generally use shorthand are secretaries, note takers and court reporters, although shorthand is very useful to know as a student. Learning stenography allows you to take notes quickly and accurately. The most popular form of shorthand is the Greggs method, which was developed in 1888, but is always adaptive to changes in modern speech.

Court stenographers need to spend a greater time learning the skill of stenography, since it is highly important for the court stenographer to transcribe all of the spoken words at the court proceedings.
