How to Learn Shorthand for Stenography
Stenography is the practice of learning shorthand. Shorthand is a way of writing abbreviating words using symbols in order to write my quickly and efficiently. Professions that generally use shorthand are secretaries, note takers and court reporters, although shorthand is very useful to know as a student. Learning stenography allows you to take notes quickly and accurately. The most popular form of shorthand is the Greggs method, which was developed in 1888, but is always adaptive to changes in modern speech.

Determine for what reason you will be using stenography, as this will dictate how in depth you will need to learn it.

Take an online class if you are student or want to learn stenography for personal use. An online course will be thorough enough to teach you the basics, but you will not have the support of an instructor who can critique your technique. Learn the advanced language of the courtroom if you decide to become a court stenographer. Court stenographers need to spend a greater time learning the skill of stenography, since it is highly important for the court stenographer to transcribe all of the spoken words at the court proceedings.

Practice your skills. It is extremely important that you practice your new stenography skills. Use your shorthand skills to record speeches being given at varying speeds, and check your work for accuracy.
