How to Fix a Formica Table

Formica is a high-pressure laminate material frequently used for countertops, sinks and tabletops. The material is inexpensive, durable and comes in a variety of colors and patterns. Formica tables are commonly used as craft or sewing tables because of the smooth, consistent surface. While it is durable, it is not damage-proof. If you find nicks, cuts or cracks on your Formica table, repair them using basic materials found at your local home improvement store. Does this Spark an idea?

Instructions

    • 1

Apply a generous amount of laminate filler to the damaged area. Use a putty knife to smooth the filler across the surface.

    • 2

Wipe any excess laminate filler away using a damp sponge. Make the surface as smooth as possible to reduce the amount of sanding you will need to do.

    • 3

Allow the filler to harden. It will expand as it dries, creating a rough surface. The filler should be dry within a couple of hours. Read the product label for your filler's exact specifications.

    • 4

Sand the damaged area's surface. Smooth out any bumps created by the filler. Do not worry about abrasions from the sandpaper. This is normal and will be "erased" by the sealer.

    • 5

Spray laminate sealer over the entire tabletop. Not only will this create a uniform look and eliminate the signs of abrasions, it will also prevent moisture from penetrating the laminate surface. Allow this to dry for several hours before placing anything on the tabletop.

Tips & Warnings

  • Avoid using sharp objects such as cutting or utility knives on laminate surfaces. Refrain from placing hot items such as boiling pots, glue guns or hot plates directly on the laminate.
