How to Install a Mountain Security Deadbolt
Installing a Mountain Security deadbolt is like installing any other general-type deadbolt. The Mountain Security deadbolt is a five-pin deadbolt with no security pins. It is a standard deadbolt and does not require any special cover plates. Most deadbolt kits come with a template for marking the holes necessary to install the deadbolt lock. If this is a new installation, you will need to carve out the areas for the strike plate and latch plate so that the two pieces will sit flush on the door and doorjamb edges. Does this Spark an idea?

1
Attach to the door the template that comes with the Mountain Security deadbolt lock kit. Mark the center of the holes for the cylinder and the latch bolt with an awl. The centers will be on the template. Place the tip of the awl over the center points and tap the awl with a hammer to make an indention in the door. Remove the template from the door.
-
2
Drill the hole for the cylinder with an appropriate-sized hole saw in your drill. Place the drill bit part of the hole saw on your indention, and drill through until the bit comes through the outside of the door. Pull out the hole saw, and finish drilling the hole from the outside of the door. This will prevent splintering of the wood on the outside of the door.

3
Replace the hole saw in the drill with an appropriate-sized hole saw for the deadbolt hole on the edge of the door. Drill the hole for the deadbolt using the indention as a guide.
-
4
Insert the deadbolt and latch plate assembly into the edge of the door. Trace the outline of the latch plate with a pencil. Pull the deadbolt and latch plate assembly out of the door. Use a wood chisel and a hammer to create a mortise in the door edge inside the tracing. The mortise needs to be deep enough so that the latch plate will sit flush with the edge of the door.
-
5
Place the deadbolt and latch plate assembly into the door edge, and secure the latch plate to the door with the retaining screws and a Phillips-head screwdriver.
-
6
Place the key cylinder portion of the deadbolt into the hole on the outside of the door. Position the thumb lock portion of the deadbolt into the hole on the inside of the door. Slide the securing screws through the thumb lock plate, and thread them into the sleeves inside the key cylinder portion of the lock. Tighten the screws with a Phillips-head screwdriver.
-
7
Test the lock operation with the key to ensure that the inside of the deadbolt is not binding anywhere. Also test the lock operation with the thumb lock.
-
8
Place the door lock into the lock position, and close the door until the bolt is against the doorjamb. Mark the center of the bolt on the side of the doorjamb with a pencil. Open the door, and place the strike plate on the doorjamb, centering the hole in the strike plate with the center mark of the deadbolt. Trace the outside of the strike plate and the inside hole with a pencil.
-
9
Drill the inside hole for the strike plate into the doorjamb with an appropriate-sized hole saw to a depth of 2 inches. Mortise the area for the strike plate in the doorjamb with a wood chisel and a hammer.
-
10
Secure the strike plate to the doorjamb with the curve of the plate pointing to the inside of the room. Test the operation of your new Mountain Security deadbolt.
