How to Burn MP3 CDs in Vista

How to Burn MP3 CDs in Vista thumbnail
MP3 CDs are referred to as data CDs in Vista.

MP3 files are the most common digital audio file. They are popular because they compress the size of the audio file to a small size, but still maintain the quality of the audio file relatively well. In Windows Vista, you can burn an MP3 CD using the built-in burning utilities. MP3 CDs, unlike traditional audio CDs, cannot be played in most CD players. Instead, they can be played only on computers or other devices that can read MP3 files. The advantage of MP3 CDs, however, is that they can hold several hours of music, while a traditional audio CD can only hold about 80 minutes of music.

Instructions

    • 1

Launch Windows Media Player, which is an application that comes preinstalled with every Windows computer.

    • 2

Click the "Burn" tab and select "Data CD or DVD" from the list of options. This step is crucial. Do not choose "Audio CD."

    • 3

Insert a blank CD into the CD-ROM drive of your computer.

    • 4

Make sure that "Burn List" does not have any files from a previous burn list. This list is located in the center of Windows Media Player. Click the red "X" to clear the burn list.

    • 5

Drag MP3 files from the leftmost pane into the "Burn List." These files are added to the list of files that will be burned onto the blank CD. Windows Media Player automatically adds MP3 files to its library, so all MP3 files on your computer should be available in the leftmost pane.

    • 6

Change the order of the files if you want to by dragging a file above or below another file in the Burn List.

    • 7

Click the "Start Burn" button. The progress of each burned item is displayed at the top of Windows Media Player.
