Every iPod that is on the market gives owners the opportunity to listen to audio files that have been saved on a computer while the owners are away from their computers. In order to listen to these songs using the iPod, you will first need to transfer the music onto the iPod. A popular Apple software program is a necessary tool for putting music that you have saved on your computer onto an empty iPod.

  1. Put music in iTunes

      Download and install iTunes.

      Open the iTunes program.

      Click "File" at the top of iTunes and a drop-down menu will open.

      Select "Add Folder to Library" inside the drop-down menu and a window will appear inside iTunes.

      Click the "Music" folder or the folder that has the music you want to put on your iPod. Then, click "Open" in the window in order to add the music located inside the selected folder to the iTunes library.

    Change iPod settings

      Connect your iPod to any USB port not currently being used on the computer. This is achieved using the USB cord that came with the iPod.

      Click the iPod name or listing found under "Devices" on the left hand side of the iTunes program. A row of tabs will be made visible near the top of iTunes.

      Choose the "Summary" tab. Clicking this tab will cause different options to be made visible in the middle of iTunes.

      Click the box that is located directly next to the "Manually manage music and videos" option and that option will be enabled on the iPod.

      Click "Apply" at the bottom of iTunes The settings on the iPod that was plugged in will now be changed.

    Add music to the iPod

      Click on "Music" on the left part of iTunes under "Library." Every song that you have added to iTunes will appear in the center of iTunes.

      Choose every song that you wish to put onto the iPod by clicking the songs. These audio files will become highlighted.

      Drag the highlighted songs over to the iPod that is still listed under "Devices" to put those songs on the iPod.

      Repeat steps 1-3 until you have finished adding music to the iPod.

      Disconnect the iPod from the computer.

Tips & Warnings

  • Music can also be placed into the iTunes library by purchasing songs from the iTunes store or ripping audio files from CDs using iTunes.
