How to Lash a Flag Pole
You can shorten the life of your flag if you lash it to a flag pole the wrong way. A common mistake it to incorporate the flag into the halyard (rope) loop, putting tension on the flag directly. Instead, the halyard should make a closed loop on its own so that the strain is put on the halyard only. Does this Spark an idea?

Thread the halyard through the pulley on top of the flag pole.

Loop each of the two ends through a snap hook's eyelet (the nonsnapping end).

Knot the snap hooks into position. The hooks need to be positioned so that the sum of the distance from the snaps to the ends of the halyard is greater than the height of the flag.

Snap the snap hooks onto the flag's grommets (eyelets).

Tie the ends of the halyard together so that the snap hooks point slightly toward each other when the flag is flat.

Pull the bottom of the halyard loop down so that it's taut.

Hold the halyard doubled up. Don't separate the two sides of the loop.

Loop it around the cleat, starting with the part of the halyard that is level with the cleat.

Make a simple repeated circle around the narrow of the cleat. A figure eight loop would also work.

Tips & Warnings
One way of threading the snap hooks so that you can adjust them afterward is to double over the lanyard to form a loop, thread the loop through the snap hook's eyelet, open the loop, and pull it over the spring-loaded end.
You can use a square knot to join the ends of the halyard. It's effective for rope that will be under tension but that may need to be undone sometime.
