How Do You Take Off a Jeep Wrangler Hardtop?

Some Jeep Wrangler JK models (2007 and newer) come equipped with a Freedom Top. This hardtop is owner-removable. Although removal takes some effort, it isn't too bad once you get the hang of it. The panels (particularly the rear one) are quite heavy; make sure you have someone to help you remove the top before beginning. If your Wrangler has an aftermarket top, the removal procedure may be quite different; however, the procedure is the same for all factory-installed hardtops.

Instructions

    • 1

Turn off the engine, set the parking brake for safety and gather the tools required to remove the hardtop. Examine the hardtop to understand its setup; there are three panels to the top: two toward the front of the Jeep (driver and passenger side) and one on the rear.

    • 2

Lower the driver's side sun visor; unhook it from the clip and move it to the left. Turn the two L-shaped latches above the rear-view mirror, and then turn the L-shaped latch above the driver's side seatbelt mount.

    • 3

Twist the two knobs on the speaker bar to unscrew them from the assembly. Set them aside. Open the latch that's mounted between the interior headliner and the windshield.

    • 4

Step out of the Jeep and lift the driver's side portion of the top off carefully. Have an assistant help you, if necessary. Repeat the procedure for the passenger's side portion of the top (driver's side must be removed first).

    • 5

Open the front doors. Remove the two Torx screws (two on each side) from the upper-corner of the door cutaway panels (right above the door opening).

    • 6

Step back into the Jeep. Remove the six Torx screws along the interior portion of the hard top (around the perimeter).

    • 7

Step outside the Jeep and open the rear swing gate. Lift the rear glass panel all the way up. Unhook the rear window washer fluid hose; tighten the cap to prevent it from spilling. Unplug the wiring harness from the driver's side of the rear storage compartment (it's attached to the hardtop).

    • 8

Lift the rear piece of the hardtop off with the help of an assistant (one person per side). Keep the panels in a safe place until you decide to reinstall them.

Tips & Warnings

  • Reverse the procedure to reinstall the top. Attach the rear panel first, followed by the passenger side of the front panel, then replace the driver's side panel. Don't forget to replace the Torx screws.
