How to Install 2001 R6 Vortex Frame Sliders
Designed to meet the expectations of serious racers, Vortex Racing Components offers protective frame sliders that have been proven on the street and track. Installing a set of frame sliders on a 2001 Yamaha YZF-R6 requires cutting of the motorcycle's plastic fairings, a task that appears daunting to most privately-funded racers since replacement fairings can be pricey.
Things You'll Need
- Play-Dough or Silly-Putty
- Allen & hex socket sets
- Screwdrivers
- Socket wrench
- Electric drill
- 1/16-inch drill bit
- Masking tape
- 2-1/8-inch hole saw
- Vortex Racing frame slider base kit (#FS-601)
- Vortex Racing frame slider puck set
Instructions
-

1
Locate the motor mounting bolts on the frame. These bolts are partially hidden behind the motorcycle's side fairings. Place a small amount of Play-Dough or Silly-Putty against the inner surface of the fairing panels facing the motor mount bolts.
-
2
Remove the motorcycle's side and lower fairings, using an Allen socket to remove the bolts on the exterior of each fairing panel. Remove the push rivets on the inner fairing by pressing the center of the rivet inward with the tip of a screwdriver, and pull the rivet out.
-
-
3
Loosen the motor mount bolts with a socket wrench. Unscrew the bolts so that they are protruding outward an inch from the frame.
-
4
Place the side fairings back onto the motorcycle and press the putty into the motor mount bolts firmly enough to leave an impression. Remove the side fairings.
-
5
Drill a 1/16-inch pilot hole directly into the center of the impression left of the fairing's putty. Remove the putty from the fairings and test fit the fairings onto the motorcycle. Push the tip of a permanent marker into the pilot hole and mark the head of the motor mount bolt to check the pilot hole's alignment. Re-drill a new pilot hole if the original hole is misaligned.
-
6
Cover the exterior of the fairings with masking tape and connect the side and lower fairings together, away from the motorcycle. Align your hole saw with the pilot hole in the side fairing panel and cut a 2-1/8" inch hole through the side and lower fairings with an electric drill. Repeat on the remaining side and lower fairing panels.
-
7
Remove the left motor mount bolt completely, using a socket wrench. Install the shorter frame slider base onto the motor mount and tighten the included replacement mount bolt with a socket wrench. Repeat on the right side, installing the longer frame slider base. Install the frame slider pucks onto the bases, tightening the mounting bolts with an Allen key or socket.
-
8
Reinstall the side and lower fairings, tightening all bolts securely. Install the push rivets by sliding the rivet into the mounting hole and pressing the center inward to lock the rivet into place.
