How to Do Backup a Program for Reinstallation?

It is always a good idea to back up a program for re-installation. Oftentimes you will encounter a program not functioning properly due to system errors, a virus or malware. A backup copy of your software will save you from needing to repurchase or redownload the software when it stops functioning. Program back ups save money and time.

Instructions

  1. Back Up With Installation CD

    • 1

Find the installation disc of the program and insert it into your CD-ROM drive.

    • 2

Use a CD burner software like Nero (free) or Roxio (commercial) (see Resources) to get a mirror image of the CD burned onto a blank CD. This will make an extra backup copy of your installation disc.

    • 3

Test the backup CD to make sure it is working properly.

    Without Installation CD

    • 4

Find the program on your hard drive by clicking the Start button and selecting "My Computer." Click on "C:\ drive" and select "Program Files."

    • 5

Locate the setup file. It should have a file extension ".exe". Connect an external storage device like a flash drive or an external hard drive. Copy this file and paste it on the external drive.

    • 6

Copy the program's entire folder if you cannot find the individual setup file. Paste it on your external storage device.

Tips & Warnings

  • You can also use a blank disc for copying the setup file or the program folder if you do not have an external storage device.
