How to Change the Spark Plugs on a 2002 Dodge Caravan
If you need to change the spark plugs in a 2002 Dodge Caravan, you're in luck. It's easy, and there are just a few major points to remember. First, disconnect the battery for safety. Second, avoid stripping the threads when installing the spark plugs in order to save your motor and your plugs. Another consideration is the type of spark plug. Either buy the plug that was originally installed in the vehicle or buy a recommended plug with the same gap width. Otherwise, you need to adjust the gap to the gap width for your model.
Things You'll Need
- Mechanic's gloves
- Wrench and spark plug socket
- Tool kit
- Repair manual
- Spark plugs and plug wires

Remove and install the spark plug

1
Carefully and gently remove the first spark plug wire in the front of the engine by following the wire by hand to the end. Wiggle the boot or end of the plug gently. Avoid pulling the wire itself. Remove the boot.
-
2
Use compressed air to blow away dirt from the spark plug area before removing the spark plug.
-
-
3
Put your wrench and socket on the end of the spark plug. Turn counterclockwise and remove the spark plug.
-
4
Install the new spark plug gently by hand and screw it clockwise, just as you would install a light bulb. Be extremely careful to keep the right angle and avoid stripping the threads. Use your wrench and spark plug socket only as necessary to tighten. Reconnect the spark plug wire.

Tips & Warnings
Stripping the threads is also called "cross-threading."
You can repair stripped threads, but it's tough work. Avoid it by being careful.
The 2002 Dodge Caravan has at least seven different models. See the Resources section of this article. Pick the right spark plug for your model.
See the resources for safety procedures.
Never confuse the wires. In other words, the first spark plug wire connects to the first spark plug, the second spark plug wire connects to the second spark plug and so forth. The order makes a big difference, so reconnect the wires exactly as they were before you started.
