How to Pick Up High Definition With an Analog Antenna
Even though local stations broadcast their signals over the air, you can still use an antenna to pick up high definition content in your area. You don't even have to run out and purchase a fancy new "digital" antenna--the old analog set of "rabbit ears" that you've had for years will do. The only adjustment that you'll have to make is ensuring that your TV's tuner is capable of receiving digital transmissions.

1
Make sure your television set is HDTV. If it is, the HDTV logo will be present somewhere on the front casing of the TV itself. If your TV is not an HDTV, even though you will be able to receive high definition television signals using your analog antenna, your television will not be physically capable of displaying them.
-
2
Screw the coaxial cable that is attached to your analog antenna into the coaxial input on the back of your HDTV. The connector on the TV usually is labeled "Antenna Cable In." Then, plug the power cord that runs off of the analog antenna into your wall outlet.

-
3
Turn on your HDTV.
-
4
Press "Menu" on the HDTV's remote control.
-
5
Scroll to the "Channel" menu setting and select "Scan." This will tell your TV to use the attached antenna to find all channels that feature available broadcasts. The high definition channels that you can receive over the air via the antenna will be found by your TV at this time. Though all channels will feature digital broadcasts, not all will be in high definition. Consult your local channel listings to find out which feature programs that are available in true high definition.
